Cycling the Swiss Alps - Albula, Oberalppass & Furka
4 continent, 20 countries, 20,000km and the Swiss Alps remain one of my highlights from cycling round the world.
We did the Albula Pass, the Oberalp Pass & the Furka Pass on three consecutive days, it was totally awe inspiring! Sore legs at the end though!
We cycled from East to West across Switzerland, so took in a lot of gorgeous alpine scenery. As we crossed the Alps in the height of summer, we had plenty of daylight, so did some big days.
The mountain scenery is second to none, the road surface is pretty pristine, and you'll meet loads of other crazy touring cyclists! Oh - and don't mind if the the roadies on their carbon fibre bikes don't say hi to you, they're just focusing on the summit!
If you've got time, take in the views, stop at the waterfalls and find some beautiful spots for lunch. It's worth it.

The Vršič Pass is a high mountain pass across the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, with an elevation of 1,611 metres. It is the highest pass in Slovenia, as well as the highest in the Eastern Julian Alps. We started in the stunning Soča Valley, cycling along the beautiful rivers and valleys, and headed over towards Kranjska Gora, before finishing our day in Austria! It was my first alpine ...
Cycling the Ciro Rail Trail - Bosnia Herzegovina

The Ciro Rail Trail is a grand trip through the stunning countryside of Bosnia Herzegovina. Once you've left Croatia and headed up into the hills, you get away from people and traffic - bliss. The narrow gauge railway in Herzegovina/ Dubrovnik regions was built in the early 20th century, and connected Mostar with Dubrovnik and Konavle in Croatia. The first ‘’Ćiro’’ passed this railway on 15th J...
Cycling the Tara River Canyon - Bosnia Herzegovina / Montenegro

The road that goes along the Tara River Canyon in Bosnia Herzegovina and Montenegro is absolutely stunning riding. The winding road takes you along cliff edge roads, through the steep hillside tunnels, with breathtaking views. The road itself was not too busy when we were there (June), and so did not feel unsafe on the bikes. The weather was a bit ropey whilst we were doing it, but I have to sa...
Cycling Serbia - Belgrade to Tara Mountain

The start of the Europe leg of our bike adventure! We started in Belgrade, Serbia, in summer - which made a huge improvement on New Zealand winter! Belgrade had some good routes to get out of the city, and before we knew it, we were in rolling countryside, and beautiful national parks. The absolute highlight for us was Tara Mountain National Park - a beautiful wild expanse with some challenging...
Cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail, New Zealand

The West Coast Wilderness Trail is a beautiful, scenic ride up the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, starting in Ross and finishing in Greymouth. The middle section between Ross and Kumara in particular is stunning, with runs through woodlands, rivers and stunning mountain views. In the midst of the West Coast of the Southern Alps, lie a series of tracks carved by pioneering gold rush m...
Cycling the Otago Rail Trail - New Zealand

Cycling the Otago Rail Trail is a super easy, fun way to see this part of the road! Nicely graded, wide gravel paths, super fun railway tunnels, rolling hills and beautiful scenery make this a great trail. There's lots of nice wee towns along the route, plenty of places to stock up on the essentials (food, beers, coffees etc), and places to camp and stay. One for all the family - we saw kids, p...
Cycling the Round the Mountains Trail - New Zealand

The Round The Mountains cycle trail in New Zealand's south island is a stunning ride (180km) through some of New Zealand's most awe inspiring scenery. The part from Mavora Lakes to Walter Peak station in particular is absolutely fantastic. I love how wild this part of the trail is too. No shops, cafes, traffic or people. Just you and nature! Temperatures got to well below zero for us on this tr...
Cycling the Alps 2 Ocean Trail - New Zealand South Island

The world-famous Alps 2 Ocean trail is New Zealand’s longest continuous cycle trail. Starting from the Southern Alps it leads you on a journey through the South Island’s spectacular scenery to the historic coastal town of Oamaru. The cycle trail is divided into 9 sections - and it's pretty stunning! It's a mixture of track, mountain paths, asphalt road and gravel road, but for a more detailed b...

Cycling from El Chaltén to Ushuaia is a beautiful, exciting ride through wild Patagonia, and comes with it's own challenges. These include 70km/h winds, sparse towns, long distances between supplies (even water), and finding spaces to camp. Cycling the border crossing - Villa O'Higgins to El Chaltén

Crossing the border from Villa O'Higgins in Chile to El Chaltén, Argentina is an incredible but challenging experience. The border crossing itself cannot be traversed by car, but you can cross by a combination of boat rides and in my case - biking! It's not an easy crossing on a fully loaded touring bike - for the first time on my trip I envied the hikers! From Villa O'Higgins you can cross Lag...
Cycling the Carretera Austral, Chile - Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins

This was our biggest challenge to date on our year of bike tour. Over 1000km of rough roads, crazy mountains and mad weather. The scenery more than makes up for it. Mountains more beautiful than you've ever seen, lakes the most incredible shade of blue, glacier-fed streams to drink from, and some of the most peaceful wild camping spots that you can imagine. Chile may well be the most beautiful ...

We've made it to our final stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway! After Big Sur, we made it to Pismo, where we camped on a beach with a load of ATVs and RVs, ragging around all night on the sand. Turns out, it was Veterans' Day Weekend, and everyone was out celebrating with gasoline! After that, we made it to the the palm-tree lined boulevards of Santa Barbara, the mountains of Santa Monica, Los...

Patagonia is one of the most beautiful on the planet and people extremely, extremely friendly, very important ❤️ Greetings from beautiful city Punta Arenas Antarctica Patagonia Chile 🇨🇱 where very strong winds blowing from Antarctica.
I was hoping to learn something about the route from this video, alas, nada. No hwy numbers. No distances. No place names I could hear. I did read Pismo in the text though. Pity. I would like to ride that way but info would be useful. If you are doing more videos on the Baja, say, please mention road numbers and campsite locations.
Thank you for the feedback, to be honest I just made it for my friends and parents could keep up with my adventure! Best of luck with your trip, when you make it!
YOU SHOULD CONSIDER GETTING AN ELECTRIC BIKE...IT WILL HELP❗✌🏿 👽
Nowhere to charge it in the middle of nowhere 🙂
Hi guys, great videos! Would you happen to have any gpx files for the Baja California part? Seems like you have a nice mix of off-road and paved cycling. We thought about doing the Baja Divide but just did a part of the GDMBR which is already plenty hard on us haha. Any help is appreciated, we're in Colorado now and will probably start the Baja part somewhere in Dec this year. Cheers!
Arg unfortunately I don't I'm sorry! I hope you have a wonderful time though - it's a great time of year to visit! I imagine you'll meet lots of bikers on the road, that's how we meandered through our trip
@@AdventureBikeTouring No worries at all, we'll definitely find a cool itinerary. Cheers guys, enjoy the rest of the adventures!
I see a lot of people come to ride this trail calling it Ciro, C like Cereal but the C is actually Ch (like Check) so it's CHiro, letter is specific to our language so it's hard to pronounce 😀 nice vid and FYI CHiro rail does not end in Mostar, we have a part of it even here in Sarajevo, nonetheless you are welcome back anytime!
Oh thank you! I loved cycling through Bosnia Herzegovina and would love to come back and complete the trail 😊
Muito legal. Daqui a pouco vou estar por aí também. Falta pouco e poucas coisas.
Thanks for the video. How long did it take you?
From memory, just a few hours. It was very beautiful - we started first thing in the morning, and were done long before lunch!
do you find that cycling through baja you should have a fair ability of speaking spanish ? did you stop in any towns along the highway ? me and a friend are planning to cycle down the coast from vancouver and into mexico this summer, but it is hard to not ignore so many of the people online who say it is not a good idea and talk about the serious dangers. but seems like you got on quite well and safe on your trip but was just hoping for some more insight and information, so that I am not going in to the trip naively. if you have any tips/info to share !
Lots of people speak English, but obviously speaking Spanish you get better information and locals are probably more able to help you out! My partner is fluent and I'm alright, so I have to say the hospitality we received was second to none. Didn't feel unsafe at all in Baja, but we took precautions to camp out of sight whilst wild camping, and spent little time in the bigger towns. Worst bit was the traffic cycling put of Tijuana, but after that it was plain sailing! I hope you have a wonderful trip! X Ps Summer will be HOT, we did it in December and that was hot enough for me!
@@AdventureBikeTouring hey, thanks so much for the message. i have booked a month of work off for May, so hoping to see how far we get with the time off, not sure if we will actually make it to Mexico but planning the route in case we do. I appreciate hearing your experience and that you felt safe throughout. I am hoping to make it the same for us if we are to make it far enough. We both don't speak Spanish which I would imagine would be an asset. It's difficult to figure out as there are stories like yours of being super safe and then other people saying stories of it being super dangerous haha, so it is definitely keeping me a little uneasy about the idea. But I could imagine worth it. We planned to not go through any major cities and staying to the smaller towns where I would imagine crime and dangerous situations would be much less of a possibility. I will keep researching, really appreciate your comment once again.
Wow, super cool video. Glad I found your channel, just subbed.
why dose not this video show your campsites?
Thnxs for Vid, i did A2O several years ago Gr8 Memories of Gr8 ride. Twas my training for Lake Taupo 160 km challenge

How long did it take to bike all the way through the road?
We did it in a bit under 3 weeks, but you could definitely do it in two - we took our time 😊
@@AdventureBikeTouring Amazing! How do you transport your bike in the airplane?
@@renzoreisch we always go find a local bike shop and they are usually happy to give them away. I think at Ushaia we ended up paying a small amount for them :)

come for the beans, stay for the accent : )
There's not a lot of comments on my channel, but this is definitely my favourite so far 🤣
I'm thinking about doing something like this. would you be willing to share your route and how you keep your gear safe when you go to a market or something. I'm pretty new to the cycling world, but coming from San Francisco, I'm well aware of the amount and ease of bike theft. I'm pretty paranoid seeing as though bikes can cost near the 10k mark and out that far that could quite literally leave me stranded.
Really beautiful trail. I must do it this coming season when New Zealand opens up for us in Sg. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome Video , Thanks for sharing!
feedback: Good video, less music more narration and expand to 15mins +
👍👏
What did you do about exit/entry stamps at that crossing?
I wish I'd filmed it! On either side of the crossing was a tiny hut with border guards, so you got your stamp at each end. We met some Frenchman guys trying to cross Argentinian border without having got a Chilean exit stamp and they had to go all the way back 😭
100% merino wool is the perfect fabric. I also carry an emergency blanket & emergency sleeping bag.. Along with my Down Sleeping bag with a nice sleeping bag liner. These pack down really small and light.
Cure for Racoons.... take a couple eggs, in a blender imulsify them with cayenne, horse radish and extremely not spices. Then take the misture and paint it on the outside of the item/bag that you want to protect.. They don't like the taste and will leave it alone.. Just don't get any on your fingers and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth.. LOL You won't like it either..
Show!
Thank you for this. I have decided it isn't a track suitable for my 9 & 11 year old children's cycling ability.
@djgrumpytee we have done both the CORT and the Wilderness Trail now. Looking for another one in the South Island if you have any suggestions.
@djgrumpytee I am doing Dunstan by myself in September. Could be a good option for the kids. Lazy two days. Plus the area is nice to extend the stay.
Don't cyclist believe in hanging their food when camping?
we do, but not when we're in the middle of cooking haha :)
hello Anna, you are by now my favorite bike blogger :) thanks again for the stove advice :) what is the skirt you are using? a maloja ? keep up the nice videos. and wow. one year trip! i am going for three months in france :) and thanks for the SKINS legging advice
Aww thank you so much mate, that's really nice! I'll have to make some more videos - I'm a bit behind as I had a baby this year! Maloja is correct, although, I realised I've been pronouncing it wrong after visiting the town! I've still got the Maloja vests, they travelled so well! However, for stuff not smelling, I definitely recommend merino instead, it's just better! I hope you have a brilliant tour in France :)
helloa anna, how nice, what kind of stove do you use???
It's called a trangia! Its an alcohol stove, a bit slow but very reliable 😊

how is the road from glencoe to fort willaim been readin some bad reviews online is it as bad as people suggest nice video the scenery looks amazing
Wouldn't recommend for cycling, it's narrow, windy and traffic is bad. It was beautiful but people overtook very dangerously as there's lots of blind corners
Muy lindos sus videos y divertidos
Hard to watch the video all the way through with that music...smh

@@AdventureBikeTouring Maybe not!.😂🤣😅
Thanks so much for these 2 Baja videos. Very nicely done! I’ll be following your tire treads in September. This takes away a chunk of the fear factor of narrow roads and brings to life the WHY I would be doing this!!! I’m excited to get started!! Gracias!!
Ahh great! I hope you have a wonderful time - it was honestly one of my favourite bits of the entire trip
Amazing video!!
It looks like you have had an amazing adventure. You will look back on this and smile all of your days.
I totally do! So many happy memories, I am one lucky person
It's a tough climb. I did it in September and there was snow at the top.
Hi Anna, thanks for your amazing video! I am planning to cycle down the lost coast together with my partner and I am not finding much information. Do you remember what was your itinerary?
Oh great! We loved it, definitely worth doing! We camped the night before at Humboldt county fairground, then got pie for breakfast in Ferndale and then headed up a very steep, bumpy road to start the journey! We followed the coast road, then went past Petrolia - there's one state campground that we spent the night at, and then the following night ended up camping at the state campground in the Avenue of the giants. Does that help?
@@AdventureBikeTouring Thanks Anna, super helpful! If the campgrounds will reopen we will definitely follow your route. If not we might opt to ride north along the 101. Thanks!
I just had to bail out of a tour on the California coast today due to Covid - the camping grounds are closed and there is little food available due to low stock in the stores and closed restaurants. I will try again next year. Your bike is a beauty and I bet it rides great with the bags loaded up too. My touring bike is a Bruce Gordon that I had built 20 years ago and it is still going strong - I am jealous of those disc brakes though. Get out there soon, but not too soon...
Ahhh so sorry you had to bail on your tour, what a crazy time we're living in! I really hope you get to do your tour next year
